Crucial Life Updates, Possibly In Order of Importance But I Admit Nothing

1. Still hooked on Battlestar Galactica. Although I tend to get ornery when main characters hook up with secondary characters when they really should be with other main characters, the ones I am emotionally invested in. Yes, it’s the sacred duty of serialized television to spin the plot line out over multiple seasons and unfulfilled chemistry with a side of tension is so much more interesting than coupled-up spats over who’s going to the black market for coffee this morning, yada yada yada, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. So I spend a lot of time scoffing and huffing and saying things like, “Yeah, fine, whatever” before shutting my computer screen to do something else. At least until it becomes painfully clear that I can’t concentrate on anything else until I find out what happens, so I continue with my watching, huffing, scoffing and scolding.

2. Suzi’s operation was successful. I am now $1320 poorer, but one working transmission richer. (Related: Money continues to utterly baffle me. How do I consistently pull it out of the clear blue sky for such things? I certainly did not have that kind of cash on hand a few weeks ago and voila! it appears just as I need it. MAGIC. I look forward to the day I can harness that kind of financial mojo for things like new shoes and trips to Portugal.) Suzi no longer wheezes when carrying me up the hills and the painful grinding noises, the ones that sound like I stuffed an inebriated raccoon in the gas tank, have ceased. I am pleased. Through some car loving friends, I got an amazing mechanic who usually works on fancy cars described by incomprehensible strings of letters and numbers rather than actual words.  Suzi is probably the least glamorous car he’s ever deigned to operate on, but apparently he needs the money. So everyone’s happy, especially Suzi who was downright jaunty on the drive home and now purrs like a petite Japanese kitten.

3. The bizarre logistics of getting Suzi to this mechanic (across the city and over a bridge and down a highway) meant that I had to choose between being stranded in San Rafael for the weekend or skiing in Tahoe with the car loving friends. Of the choices I’ve had to make in my life, this was one of the easier ones. I went skiing. And I’m very proud to announce that I have accomplished one of my goals for 2010: Get down a black diamond without giving myself a concussion. Not only did I accomplish this goal, I improved upon it. By swooping quickly down multiple black diamonds without falling. Did you hear that? I DID NOT FALL. NOT ONCE DID I FALL. Well, fine. I did fall once, but it was while getting off the ski lift, so it doesn’t count.

It seems counter intuitive to me that fancy pants cars have no discernible name. If I’m dropping $80k on a car, I’d much rather be able to say ‘Oh my yes bitsy, I am loving my Pirate Comet” instead of oh yeah, here I am with my A8. Sounds like I’m at bingo. And bingo is great, don’t get me wrong, but still… just doesn’t have that same ring to it.

I tip my hat to you and your skiing prowess. Last time I went skiing, I couldn’t get the hang of the bunny hill ski lift – you hold on to half a boomerang and it drags you up the hill – and managed to slide so I was parallel with the ground with my legs flailing behind me like stubby clubs of destruction for those behind me. And I was 20. I should stick to the non-frozen water sports.

Yay, Suzi! Yay, black diamonds! Which resort did you ski? (I ask so maybe when I’m more up to practice and ready to follow in your ski tracks, heh, I can know where to go!)

I too became addicted to Battlestar Galatica. I watch the first season and didn’t really think I liked it. So I got the second season from Netflix. Then all of a sudden I was watching 4-5 episodes a night and COULDN’T STOP. By the time I got the last episode (no spoilers) I had to take breaks to breath!

Long story short, I now have two cats named Apollo and Helo.

Also, I hope you are referring to Apollo and Starbuck, because they are my FAVORITE.

Duchessbelle: The Mercedes 147SWP68 would be a whole lot more interesting if it was named the Pirate Comet.

Camels & Chocolate: Dodge Ridge – it was really good. Two Moose Antlers up.

Beth: I AM ABSOLUTELY TALKING ABOUT APOLLO AND STARBUCK AND PLEASE MAKE THE EXTRANEOUS LOVE INTERESTS STOP. PLEASE. Also, I was up until 2 a.m. last night watching the tail end of the second season and, if the all-caps are any indication, it made me a little crazy.

OMG, wait until the start of season 3 – it completely blew my mind. There were little pieces of brain matter floating around. Oh man, I need to watch the whole series again!

  6. Locusts and Wild Honey

Oh, Suzi! I’m so glad you’re still with us.

So Apollo’s frakin’ Dualla, huh? You’ll make it through this awkward period. I promise.

We finished Battlestar last night. Up next? CAPRICA! That’s right, the pre-quel, baby.

You are a black diamond maven!

Ooh BSG is great. and now they have Caprica which I’ve enjoyed getting addicted too. Somehow now that show has brought me over to the dark side of liking Sci Fi. But fun stuff!

  9. Another Karen

Oh all this BSG talk is making me want to haul out the DVD’s and watch the whole series over again! I haven’t gotten that hooked on Caprica yet. I think I’m just too afraid it won’t be as good or compelling as BSG. I suppose I should just watch the recorded episodes on the DVR and get hooked already.

Hooray for ‘the little engine (er, transmission) that could’ Suzi! Nothing feels worse than having to pay for a huge car repair bill but then nothing feels better than having said car all back up and running right.

And yay for black diamond skiing! I’ve only been skiing twice in my life and the first time didn’t end so well (me in a hospital having my knee x-rayed). But I did better the second time around as an adult. Perhaps my clumsiness is slowly dissipating? (Nah, probably not as I still have lots of bruises to prove otherwise).

    1. Clearly the most important. Do not be dissuaded by the mid-season 3 slump! Things pick up and when I say that, know that it is a SERIOUS understatement.

    2. Good for Suzi. I still kind of miss my ole’ Yellow (guess what color it was, go ahead). But it would be silly to still have a car when I can walk to work.

    3. I’m pretty sure this means you’re awesome (but I have no knowledge of skiing whatsoever).

P.S. If you figure out the logistics of this whole money from the sky thing, please do share.

    Yay for Suzi!

Also, double yay for Black Diamond: Unconcussed (yes, that has a colon in it, just like a book title).

I’m so glad Suzi is all better. I took my car into the shop this week because she was making a horrible noise when I turned right and it was a matter of time before the whole wheel fell off.

Thankfully Yelp recommended an awesome shop near my house and it was under $500! Which is probably about all my car is worth these days!

  14. alimartell

so…you’re saying I should start watching Battlestar Gallactica, then?

I’m still mad at BSG for killing off Billy. I miss Billy!
