Don’t Even Ask About Harry Potter (Edited)
Posted by Moose on August 5th, 2008. Filed under: Daily.I am an unabashed nerd. When I was 16, I went to see Interview with a Vampire the day it opened. WEARING A CAPE. (Go ahead and laugh. I’ll wait.) I bought the last Twilight novel mere hours after it was released - and finished reading it mere hours after handing over my credit card to the bored clerk at Borders. My crush on Joss Whedon grows hourly and J.J. Abrams will be forever dear to my heart for the first three seasons of Alias.
But my real downfall came in the form of two FBI agents searching for little green men.
My devotion to the X Files cannot be conveyed in words. Oh, wait. Yes, it can: CRAZY. I was quite earnest about the X Files back in the day, before David Duchovny defected and the plot became utterly incomprehensible. (Well, I was still a fan long after the plot dissolved in a mess of bees and oil and sullen, bejowled men, it was the exit of Mulder that had me flipping channels for a new obsession.) When I was in London, I made a friend tape it every Sunday. I checked the web sites after each new episode to dissect plot synopses and find out what shade of auburn Gillian Anderson’s hair was that week. I saw the first movie the day it opened. I applauded wildly with every other loon in the audience when the theme song piped through the theater.
So imagine my shock when I realized that there was a SECOND movie out. A second movie I didn’t even know was being made. Not that this is a suprise, necessarily. I’m about as clued in to pop culture as your 87-year-old grandmother. Less so, if she knows how to operate Google or owns a TV. If I know a band, it means that band broke up three years ago and are busy sprouting pot bellies. But you’d think a new X Files movie would penetrate my shield of ignorance. (Not so much. I heard about it from my mother.)
But my rampant geekery will be revived when I go see the movie tonight. I have no idea what to expect, because all I remember from the trailer is that Gillian Anderson’s hair is now long. But, in the end, isn’t Gillian Anderson’s hair all that matters?
~~~
Edit: Why Nobody Pays Me To Write Reviews
In general: If you are an X Files fan, you will enjoy this movie. If you are an X Files fan who was really just in it to see Scully and Mulder hook up, you will definitely enjoy this movie. If you couldn’t care less about the X Files, then you should watch this movie if a friend rents it, invites you over, and you don’t have a pressing engagement to vacuum cat hair.
In specific: Gillian’s hair is lovely. Just lovely.
I’m not a huge X-Files fans, but I watch and read enough entertainment nonsense that I usually know when big movies are coming out. And I was totally taken aback. It was like three days before the movie released they decided to start advertising it or something. Very odd considering how much hype the Batman movie got. X-Files got the exact opposite!
It’s okay, Moose. I was in “Showgirls.”
Oh, wait. That’s Elizabeth Berkeley’s response to these type of embarrassing confessions, not mine.
Sorry.
I never watched the X-Files during the 90’s… probably because I a) didn’t like the dubbed version (yes, we commit this horrible, horrible crime in Germany!) and b) I just wasn’t a fan of the supernatural.
But now, hubby got me into it… and I mean, INTO IT. We’ve been watching the episodes start to finish (well, not finished yet!) on DVD and I am dying to see the movie… although I heard mixed opinions about it.
In any case, I do like Gillian Anderson with the long hair. Let’s see if she can still pull of the tough FBI agent with it.
Tell us how you liked it, but don’t spoil it for me
Wait, what are the rules about asking about Lost? Do you watch Lost? If you don’t, what are you waiting for? Hmmm????
August 5th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Also a fan of everything and everyone you mentioned, especially Joss Whedon. Did you know he has a new TV series starting soon called “The Dollhouse”?
August 5th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
I almost went to see it and then changed my mind because I’m not into x-Files or Joss or J.J. and when people were discussing Twilight the other day I had no effing clue as to what they were talking about.
So do you totally not like me anymore?
For the record I could watch Lost every day for the rest of my life if given the choice.
Moosey? You had me at cape.
Hi Moose, I’m a new reader via Holly (NBB) and I have to say that it is apparent to me we are kindred spirits. My first clue was how much I seemed to love the photos of your tiny kitchen, but this X-Files thing did me in. I was OBSESSED with the X-Files. I used to have every single episode on tape (taped them all myself) and I knew all the episode names and plot subtleties. I even went to an X-Files convention once. That’s right, I said it. I also quit after Duchovny left (um, hello, you cannot have the X-Files without MULDER).
I saw the second movie this weekend and I was underwhelmed. I liked all the inside jokes/references (which I still got, because I am a nerd) but I thought the story was weak and felt they would have done better going with something more humorous (Small Potatoes!) or at least more interesting/tension filled (Pusher! Squeeze!). Also, as much as I was an unabashed ’shipper and always believed Mulder and Scully to be in tortured, unrequited love, I found the couple-y parts of I Want to Believe sort of awkward.
I’m very curious to hear what you thought.
I loved the X-Files till Duchovny left too, then lost interest. I also didn’t know the second movie was coming out till like five minutes before it was released. I saw it the day after it opened, and I was amazed at how good it was to see Mulder and Scully again.
Are you, by any chance, a browncoat? Or do you love Joss for other reasons?
Who knew it was gonna be all ‘Red Speedo Fan-Club” in here! ahahahhaha… he is hot, and if you haven’t seen his Cheerleader skit on SNL – well.. you’re missing out. And if you miss D.D. you MUST watch Californication… now in that show he’s hot. Mind you – no SciFi stuff… but still! Can’t wait to hear the review!
I’m so with you on this. And God was I in love with David Duchovny.
August 5th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
Isn’t it so weird how there wasn’t the slightest bit of advertising? I never once saw a preview and I go to see A LOT of movies. The only reason I knew it was coming out was because I went to Comic-Con earlier this year, and thousands of caped geeks were there to greet Gillian and David in all their geeky glory!
YES, YES, YES. Loved X Files! But I have heard that the movie is underwhelming. You’ll have to let me know.
My favorite ep was Clydy Bruckman’s Final Repose, the one about the guy who could see the future. And I’ll never get over the super creepy episode with the incestuous family that kept their legless sister on a wheeled board under the bed and brought her out only for breeding purposes. EEEWWW.
August 6th, 2008 at 7:29 am
Um, no…there are certain other *features* belonging to David Duchovny that also matter. And I’m not talking about his brain.
(Is it hot in here?)
Can’t wait to hear your review. I, too, was an avid fan of the show for as long as it was good, but I’ve heard mixed reviews of the movie. Truthfully, if it sucks, I really don’t want to see it because it’ll ruin what little love I had for it after Mulder left. Just pleeeease tell me they makeout!
Is it strange that I wanted to jump up and down and do cartwheels after reading your first paragraph up there? And that I kind of want to give you a hug?
A. and I saw the movie last weekend. Please post your thoughts after you see it – I’d love to compare notes!
I was an X-Files fan until I got tired of the same-old conspiracy alien cloak-and-dagger weirdness. I loved the stand-alone episodes the best and they were woefully few and far between; I also like the funny ones, which were also scarce on the ground (Small Potatoes, Bad Blood). But Joss! I love everything Joss! Do you know about Dr. Horrible? And, of course, Dollhouse, as someone else mentioned. I can’t wait! I’m still mad at Fox for shafting Firefly.
Oh the first three seasons of Alias are fantastic. I still think the season finale of season two (or was it three?) was the best season finale of any show I’ve ever watched.
And I could write ENTIRE ESSAYS on my love for Felicity.
Not Anonymous! Just an idiot!
August 6th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
So apparently no one really knew about the X-Files movie until recently. That Chris Carter kept it under wraps. Which I didn’t think was possible in Hollywood.
I’m excited too! In high school, my study hall teacher, who was the film teacher, would make us watch X Files during study hall. I was hooked!
And then I got an I Heart Mulder tattoo on my ass.
August 6th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
I realize this is mostly about the X-Files and the awesome that is Gillian’s hair (and you’ll get no objections from me there) but if you like the Whedon, and haven’t already, stop what you’re doing and watch Dr. Horrible. Now. Really. There’s bits on youtube if you want a preview, go on.
August 6th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Gillian Anderson has always had fantastic hair. Although I think the Fluke episode scared me for life, for real. I think that was the last episode I watched, I just couldn’t handle it after that.
August 6th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
I, too, am a fan and did pay very close attention to Scully’s hair every week. And being the big nerd that I am, I do recall registering on a fan site BB one time that I wanted to be the “keeper of Mulder’s sweatpants.” Um, more like I’d like to be IN THEM WHILE HE’S WEARING THEM. Or something.
I saw the movie last week. I was a little disappointed with the plot, but the cash spent to watch Mulder and Scully together again for 100 minutes was worth it. I hope you enjoy it.
August 6th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
This was about X Files? Hello! Edward and Bella! There should be pages devoted to the mental image of the rock, paper, scissors game between Edward and Alice and the verbal (?) flogging of the whole Jacob section that was about as enjoyable as watching grass grow. Acknowledge the superiority there and we can be friends again!
Maybe bowing to the creator of Buffy can save you.
OK, so it’s been well established, but I love you right now (and, well, always). I am always giddy with excitement when a friend of mine geeks out about the same things I do, like vampire movies (YES, please), Joss (The WRITING!), Twilight (Am 100 pages away from finishing book 4, and I started book one on SATURDAY; how did I miss it so long ago?), Alias (though we’ve had those conversations), and now Mulder and Scully, too. My step-dad and I loved the show together and Friday nights watching The X-Files was our thing for YEARS.
OK, so I have to end this comment before I just start making ridiculously incomprehensible gleeful noises.
(Also: I think you should come to Portland in December to watch the Twilight movie with me. Chris doesn’t quite get the draw. ; ) )
love you blog… love Harry Potter… LOVE LOVE LOVE Alias (and terribly bummed that it is over, even though they did make a pretty baby.)
still toying with the notion of vacuuming cat hair. http://www.cvswriters.com/
s’pose it’s best to wait ’til it’s off the cat.
Anyone who wears a cape to a movie is someone whom I can get along with.
I have nominated you for a blog award. I have enjoyed your writing and the fact that you don’t take yourself too seriously.
Check out the award here…http://www.dtemama.com/?p=63
So i read both the first two twilight novels in the the last 4 days…i’m now obsessed and trying my best not to run out and buy the others today (i have to try to maintain a real life at least for a little bit).
August 14th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
You WORE A CAPE–I can’t. I can’t breathe from laughing so hard. Is there a picture somewhere? PLEASE SAY YES!!
