Much Better than a Welcome Mat

The Italians do many things better than Americans – dangerous vehicles, skinny shoes, mozzarella. But it’s their singular devotion to awesome building adornment that makes this small, boot-shape country great. Romans, Shomans. Take me to the door knockers. Observe:

Italian Door Knocker

Fierce mustache that makes me wish I could grow facial hair.

Italian Gargoyle with Protruding Tongue

Scare the hell out of small children. And me.

Italian Rodent

Tie your horse to a rodent bursting out of a brick wall.

HILARIOUS! Did you take these photos? What city? I recall some doozies like this in Venice, but I don’t think I ever got lost in neighborhoods in Rome enough to find anything remotely great in the way of the door knocker. Ah… makes me long for travel again.

I did take these, with my very own two (shaky) hands. I think all of these were in Rome, though one of them may have been in San Gimignano. I’ve been wanting to travel lately too. I’m trying to appease the travel bug by posting lots of old travel photos.

    It’s like LABYRINTH!!!!!

Oh, Labyrinth. How I loved that movie. And David Bowie with his flowing locks and tight pants.

I think I would be too frightened to knock at any of these doors. Depending on the inhabitents, they might view that as a success! They are well-wrought though, and so detailed! Just scary. (Is the little man in the first door knocker actually BITING the hoop? Really?)

    Yikes!

Yeah, seriously, the second one? Made me wince a little. But still quite awesome.

I love the third one. I could never put my finger on what our building was missing. Until now.

Ack! That second one just reminded me of a scene out of Pan’s Labyrinth. Or the David Bowie Labyrinth, come to think of it, as a reader above already noted (and which I purchased at Target for $6.50 this weekend! Go 80′s!).

I so want that middle knocker. It’s like Halloween ALL YEAR ROUND, and what’s better than that? Basically nothing.
