Tahoe Fire (from SF Chronicle)

Yesterday, the Angora Fire jumped the containment line. About 2,000 more people were evacuated and there are fears that the fire could jump Highway 89 to a more densely populated section of Lake Tahoe. When my brother was shipped out on Sunday, there were about 700 firemen. As of yesterday, there are 1,900. Apparently, there’s no cold lemonade involved in what my brother does. His crew goes into endangered areas to decide which homes they can try to save. If you have a wood roof and stacks of firewood piled up next to your house, you’re screwed. But if your house is somewhat less flammable, they’ll clear the brush from the perimeter and hose down the structure. Then I assume they run for dear life.

My brother is in Tahoe saving people’s homes. I don’t know what you’re doing right now, but I’m feeling useless.

And worried.

I’m very much hoping that your brother doesn’t find himself in the position to have to run for dear life. Maybe he can amble off to a nice cold lemonade instead. Bastard fire.

Ugh, I hear you… My nephew was on fire crew during some of the really bad fire seasons in Oregon a couple of years back, and it was nerve-wracking stuff. Best of luck to your brother!

Hi. Can I sympathize AND tell you that the new design is sweet, all at the same time?

I hope your brother is okay! I feel pretty useless too! The scenic moose picture is adorable!

I’m keeping Matthew and his crew in my prayers. AND I’m grateful that there are dedicated people like him that are willing to take on this scary job.

Your brother is brave indeed. Thinking of you. And hoping the scary is over soon.

Huge kudos to your brother, and I read the lemonade thing as you making light of him doing dangerous things as only a sister can. It’s probably strange to have a weird internet person say this, but I’ll be worried about your brother (even if I only know him as Moose’s brother) too.

(PS – I really like the site redesign, now that I can see it)
