The Plight of Woman
Posted by Moose on May 18th, 2006. Filed under: My Brain Needs a Drink.Centuries of oppression. Suffragettes being hauled to jail after hunger strikes. Woman suffering societal censure, low pay, and the criticism of their families – all in search of equality and the ability to make their own living. Now there’s me. I have a job, I can support myself, am a functioning member of society – and all I want to do is stay at home and bake scones. I am a disgrace to woman kind. The ghost of Betty Friedan is attempting to wrench my lap top from my hands and whack me solidly over the head with it.
But have you tasted my scones? They’re not very good. Yet they make me happy. Standing in front of the window, sticking my hands in buttery flour is a tactile delight that totally beats sitting under fluorescent lights for hours at a time. I’m thinking we may have been a little hasty with this whole feminism thing. Especially now that we’re stuck with careers AND the raising of children. Not to mention the housework and role models like Martha Stewart, she of the publication designed to make us feel sub par if there is dust under the couch, or soap on the sink that came in paper wrapping, i.e. not made by our own two hands from rendered tallow and dried flowers from the backyard. Organic dried flowers.
I’m thinking that we may have managed to gain the worst of both worlds. We now do everything. Well, I don’t. I haven’t cleaned the bathroom in over a month. But there are certainly women out there who do. It is for those women, the women who do everything, that I advocate a return to the Goddess Model. I don’t know what exactly that is, but the hippies are totally on to something. I think a little worshipping – fanning with ostrich feathers and spooning of creme brulee into our expectant mouths – is the direction we women should aim for next.
Given my status as a childless woman who sees dirty dishes as merely an opportunity for more creative stacking, I abdicate my rights to the Goddess Model and all attendant feather fanning. But I totally reserve the option to ditch work in favor of a little baking.
