Step Away from the Vehicle

My dance teacher once said, “Bad drivers are bad dancers.”

I, my friends, am a bad driver. Three accidents in as many months. In all fairness, one was not my fault. Unfortunately, that still leaves two. One with no damage and one that almost totalled my car. Nobody was hurt and that’s the important thing – but it is a less than stellar testament to my skill as a driver.

I hold that learning to drive a stickshift and parallel park in San Francisco should gain me some credit. I should have learned to parallel park earlier than the San Francisco move, but when one is driving in San Jose and unsure about the whole parallel parking thing, one can just drive around until there’s half a block free. This is not an option if you ever want to get out of the car in the City of No Parking Anywhere Ever.

I have become one of those drivers everyone hates. I do wait for the occasional pedestrian, but only because I’m yelling at another driver. I tail, I roll through stop signs, I curse when someone obviously doesn’t know where they’re going. Conversely, I curse when I don’t know where I’m going and other people tail me. I mean, how rude can you be? I’m lost here, dude! Yes, it’s safe to say that I’m not the world’s best driver.

But allow me to impart to you this bit of wisdom: take the hills on Gough St. with enough speed and your car will lift into flight. For at least a few feet.
